Greetings!

As I’ve closed down the show, I’ve decided to sell off about 350 of my games (which is about a third of my collection, so I’m not selling everything!) You can find information about the sale at http://tinyurl.com/bgwssale

You can still hear me on the On Board Games podcast. I was particularly happy with Episode 58, where we talked about ideas we are working on as game designers. You can hear that episode at

During the last few months, I’ve been writing about games in two places.

First – I’ve been looking at larger issues in board games as the Game Professor over at Board Game Info. You can find these posts over at boardgameinfo.com and there is an RSS feed at http://www.boardgameinfo.com/external.php?do=rss&type=newcontent&sectionid=43&days=120&count=10action=subscribe

Second – I’ve started a blog on Board Game Geek called “Get Off My Lawn.” This is a very different take about games – I’m taking aspects of games that bother me for some reason and talking about them. My hope is that it will help future designers to see things about their game that might bother some players. This is Grumpy Old Man Nicholson, who has been in the background for years during Board Games with Scott, enjoying his time to grouse about games. You can read these posts over at boardgamegeek.com or get an RSS feed at http://boardgamegeek.com/rss/blog/292

I will be doing a teaching video about Republic of Rome, as that was the winner in the auction for Jack Vasel. I’m reading the rules, but have a play of it on the schedule for later in April, so I expect to work on this video in May.

Finally, I am getting ideas for a “Things I Regret” BGWS video, where I do some of the bits and games that I truly regretted not getting around to for BGWS.

Welcome to the BGWS 2.0! In this rethinking of the show, Scott moves away from focusing on just one game per episode, but instead does more comparing and contrasting. There will still usually be at least one new game involved, but the focus in the show will be more of a study of a mechanic, a theme, or a lineage of game. Scott won’t be teaching you the rules any longer, as there are many other video series that do that.

Enjoy the Sci-Fi series Battlestar Galactica? Or enjoy roleplaying experiences trying to unearth traitors (or being a traitor)? Then take a look at Battlestar Galactica: The Reality Show. For this special episode, I filmed an actual game of BSG in reality-show style with a confessional so you can learn what the players are thinking.

I became aware of the idea through Logan Bretschneider. One of his friends did “Risk Night” as a school project, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKqHB5erubc, and I thought the idea was great and would work well for BSG.

Welcome back!

Over the last few months, I’ve been going through a lot of thinking about Board Games with Scott. I have been burning out on the old format, and I’ve decided to make some changes. I posted a few questions over at Scott’s Stuff (http://www.youtube.com/snicholson), and have done some soul-searching.

Welcome to the new Board Games with Scott! The biggest change I’ll be making is shortening the shows. I’m not going to be doing all of the rules, but rather, presenting a broader overview of the game. I’m removing many of the cut-aways, section breaks, and other time-consuming edits.

I’m also going to be doing some experimentation with technology and format. It’s akin to starting over, as I’ll be learning again more about creating videos. I’ve also decided to discontinue the BGWS audio-only feed.

Without further ado, I bring you Formula D!

You can download Board Games with Scott 055 – Formula D from the Internet Archive. (other formats available).

For all of you that are reading this blog through an RSS feed reader, it should work fine, and will let you know when there’s a board game-related episode on Scott’s Stuff.

I’ve designed my first board game, called Tulipmania 1637. It’s a stock market game that replicates the bubble market that was in 1637 regarding the price of tulip bulbs that almost destroyed the dutch economy. I made the game after visiting the Tulip museum in Amsterdam and learning all about Tulipmania, and wanted to pass along the lesson of how bubble markets occur and the role of unethical people in these markets. You are one of these less-than-ethical investors trying to take advantage of the innocent Tulip Buyers.. and each other.

It’s planned to be published in October (and as soon as I get a copy, I’ll make a Blatant Plug Video about it.)

But, if you want to explore it, the publishers have created a version that you can try online for free until the game comes out.

You can read the rules and download the software to try the game at
http://www.jklminteractive.co.uk/jklm/tulipmania.php

and you can preorder the game with a discount at
http://www.jklmgames.co.uk/gamessin.php?game=420

(end Blatant Plug)
